It’s one of the questions we hear most from parents in Rehoboth, Attleboro and Seekonk: “Is my child old enough for club soccer?” The honest answer is that age matters less than readiness. But there are clear patterns, and knowing them helps you make a good first choice.
Ages 4 to 6: play first, structure second
At this age the goal is simple: lots of touches on the ball and a love for the game. Short sessions, small games and plenty of fun matter far more than positions or results.
Many kids start in a town recreational program, and that’s a great first step. Some 5- and 6-year-olds who already love the ball are ready for a more structured program with a coach who plans every session.
Ages 7 to 9: when many kids are ready for more
This is often when families start looking at club or competitive soccer. Players can follow instructions, practice a skill on purpose and understand the basics of playing as a team.
Signs your child might be ready for a competitive club:
- ✓They ask to practice, not just to play games.
- ✓They’re frustrated when practice ends, not relieved.
- ✓They play with the ball at home without being told to.
- ✓They can handle hearing “try it again” from a coach.
Ages 10 to 13: the development window
Between 10 and 13, players can learn quickly: better first touch, smarter decisions and real tactical understanding. Kids who get consistent, quality coaching in these years often make the biggest jumps.
It’s not too late to start at 10, 11 or 12. Plenty of players join a club at this age and catch up fast with good coaching and enough touches, especially with a winter indoor program between seasons.
What to look for in a first club
Whatever the age, a good first club should check these boxes:
- ✓Licensed coaches who plan sessions, not just run scrimmages.
- ✓Teams grouped by age, so your child plays with and against peers.
- ✓A culture where effort and character matter, not only the scoreboard.
- ✓Clear communication about schedule, cost and what’s expected of families.
How Peace Soccer School approaches it
PSS coaches boys and girls ages 5 to 13, with teams from 7U to 13U. Players train twice a week in season, play weekend league games, and keep developing over the winter with indoor training in Seekonk. Every session also includes prayer and a short devotional, because we care about the person as much as the player.
If you’re not sure whether your child is ready, come talk to us. We’ll tell you honestly which team or program fits.
