What to bring to youth soccer practice: a parent checklist

By Mina Faltas, Co-founder & Head Coach, USSF-licensed · October 24, 2026 · 4 min read

PSS players at an evening practice

The first week of a new season, we always see a few players show up in sneakers, without water, or with a ball that’s the wrong size. It’s never a big deal, but the right gear makes practice safer and more fun. Here’s the checklist we give our own families.

The essentials, every practice

  • ✓Soccer cleats (molded rubber studs, not metal) for grass. Turf shoes or flat sneakers for indoor turf.
  • ✓Shin guards, worn under soccer socks. They’re required for games and for most practices.
  • ✓A ball with your child’s name written on it.
  • ✓A full water bottle. Water is better than sports drinks for a one-hour practice.
  • ✓Comfortable athletic clothes and hair ties for long hair.

What size soccer ball does my child need?

Ball size follows age. The standard guideline in US youth soccer is:

  • ✓Size 3: players under 8.
  • ✓Size 4: players about 8 to 12.
  • ✓Size 5: players 13 and older (the adult size).

Fitting cleats and shin guards

Cleats should be snug, with about a thumb’s width of room at the toe. Too much room and kids trip or get blisters. Buy them for this season, not “to grow into.”

Shin guards should cover from just below the knee to just above the ankle. Slip-in guards with a compression sleeve are easiest for younger players.

Cold, rainy or hot days

New England weather changes fast. Keep a small bag in the car with:

  • ✓A light jacket or hoodie and a warm hat for fall evenings.
  • ✓Thin gloves (players can wear them in cold weather).
  • ✓A towel and a dry pair of socks for after rainy practices.
  • ✓Sunscreen for summer sessions.

What to leave at home

  • ✓Jewelry, including earrings and watches. Referees won’t allow it in games, so it’s a good habit to start at practice.
  • ✓Gum or candy during play.
  • ✓Brand-new cleats on game day. Wear them at practice first.

At Peace Soccer School

Our players train with USSF-licensed coaches at Bliss Fields in Rehoboth during the spring and fall, and indoors at Teamworks in Seekonk during the winter. If you’re new and not sure what your child needs, ask any of our coaches. We’re happy to help.

Quick answers

What size soccer ball does a 7-year-old need?+
A size 3 ball. Players about 8 to 12 use a size 4, and players 13 and older use a size 5.
Are shin guards required for youth soccer practice?+
They are required for games, and most clubs, including Peace Soccer School, ask players to wear them at every practice too.
Can kids wear soccer cleats on indoor turf?+
Molded cleats are allowed on many turf fields, but turf shoes give better grip and are easier on the legs. Check the facility’s rules first.
